German

German is the most widely-spoken first language in the European Union, being an official language of many countries, including Germany and Austria. As both English and German are so-called Germanic languages, they share some of the same vocabulary and grammatical features which is of benefit to English speakers. The presence of grammatical cases and genders in German, however, is often considered by English speakers to be challenging. German has been taught in Australian schools and universities since the 19th century.
